Frequently Asked Questions

What is this course about?

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to Oracle Database 11g. You learn how to design, build and manage robust database applications with Oracle database tools.

Oracle 11g is a large, complex system. This course provides an overview of the power and flexibility of Oracle databases and serves as the foundation for other courses in the Learning Tree Oracle Databases curriculum.

Extensive hands-on exercises provide invaluable, practical experience building Oracle 11g databases. The knowledge you learn in this course can be immediately applied to your job when you go back to work.

What is the Oracle database server?

Oracle database server is a complex relational DBMS that supports large-scale databases and enables high-speed transactions, better business decisions and sophisticated applications. The most popular versions supported are Oracle Database 11g R2 and Oracle10g.

How different are the Oracle versions?

In general, Oracle Database 11g R2 is a superset of Oracle 10g. Each version contains additional functionality across a wide spectrum, however the basic architecture remains. The complete skill set required to effectively work with and administer Oracle databases varies across version releases, therefore the Learning Tree introductory courses are version-specific.

What version of Oracle is used?

This course is currently running on Oracle 11g, Release 2, on the Windows Server 2003 platform.

Who will benefit from this course?

This course benefits a wide range of professionals, including:

  • Developers, analysts, administrators, managers, programmers, consultants, power users and others who design and write Oracle applications using Oracle 11g
  • Database administrators who want to become proficient in querying and manipulating an Oracle database
  • Data processing professionals with experience working in a traditional database system (hierarchical or network), who are now moving to a client/server or Web environment
  • Technology managers and project leaders who need a general overview of Oracle 11g

What background should I have?

Familiarity with relational databases and experience with the SQL programming language at the level of Course 925, SQL Programming Language: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, are required. If you have a strong background in a dialect of SQL other than Oracle, a small part of this course may be familiar to you, but you still benefit from the Oracle-specific material presented.

Does this course cover the new features of Oracle 11g?

This course does not spend a great deal of time covering the new features of Oracle 11g. Instead, this course focuses on the database principles and skills needed to develop robust databases for your organization. You gain a solid foundation on which to build your skills with Oracle 11g.

Should I take Course 593 as well as this course?

No, you should take only one of the two introductory courses. These courses cover basic introductory features of Oracle databases, including how to build, query and manipulate an Oracle database. This course introduces the latest advances in Oracle 11g, as well as fundamental topics relevant to Oracle 9i and higher. Course 593 covers Oracle 9i and 10g fundamentals, and participants perform exercises on an Oracle 10g database.

What kinds of hands-on exercises are included in the course?

Approximately 40 percent of class time is devoted to hands-on exercises. The hands-on exercises provide immediate reinforcement of the material covered. Exercises include:

  • Designing a database with a data model
  • Navigating the dictionary with Enterprise Manager
  • Coding with SQL Developer and SQL*Plus
  • Retrieving and manipulating data with SQL constructs
  • Creating tables, sequences, views and synonyms
