Windows Server 2003: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction

Course: 595     Type: Hands-On     Duration: 5 Days

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this course about?

This course provides a complete hands-on exploration of Windows Server 2003. Windows Server 2003 builds on the well-established core technologies of Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4. You gain experience in the first steps toward evaluating, designing and deploying a Windows Server 2003 environment.

An organization has many users and many points of data distribution. Windows Server 2003 has mechanisms to fully control users and groups, delegating administration where necessary. It also has the ability to create a logical view of the organization's data. A key factor in providing these distributed services is the total integration of security. These topics are all covered in the course.

Who will benefit from this course?

This course is beneficial for those who are new to Windows as well as those who are migrating from Windows NT, or a previous version, to Windows Server 2003. Those with strong experience in Windows 2000 should consider Course 596, Windows Server® 2003 Active Directory®: Hands-On, Course 597, Deploying and Managing a Windows Server® 2003 Environment: Hands-On, and Course 599, Securing Windows Server® 2003: Hands-On, for instruction on aspects of Windows Server 2003.

What background do I need?

It is assumed that you are familiar with basic operating system technologies and are comfortable using a graphical user environment. Although knowledge of a Windows user interface would be helpful, it is not assumed.

My company is currently running Windows 2000 and is now thinking of moving to Windows Server 2003. Should I attend Course 595?

Windows Server 2003 is effectively an incremental upgrade to Windows 2000; consequently the concepts you learn are the same. If you are interested in performing the hands-on exercises using Windows Server 2003, then you should attend Course 595.

Does the course cover the Active Directory Services?

Yes. We fully explore the directory services, including domains, domain trees, schema, domain controllers, Global Catalogs (GCs), and the Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI).

Does the course cover Windows XP and Windows 2000 Professional?

Yes. The course covers the Active Directory and the interaction between the Windows client and servers at an introductory level. The course offers client details based on Windows Server 2003, but they are equally applicable to Windows XP. For full coverage of Windows XP, you should take Course 551, Windows® XP Professional: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction.

Does the course cover the Windows Scripting Host and the Distributed File System (DFS)?

Yes. The course examines the scripting capabilities provided by Windows Server 2003. You use simple scripts to show how Active Directory Service objects can be added and manipulated using the Active Directory Services Interfaces. The course covers implementing DFS on Windows Server 2003 and how to make DFS volumes available to other Windows clients.

Will this course teach me how to set up a TCP/IP network?

Course 595 treats the network as a service that is already in place. You learn about the changes that you need to make for your network to fully support Windows Active Directories. The course includes detailed coverage of DNS, which is required to support the Windows namespace.

I've taken the Windows NT 4 Workstation and Server course (Course 455). Will this course be useful to me?

Yes. Although there is some overlap of material between Courses 455 and 595, Course 595 focuses on leveraging the important new features of Windows Server 2003.

I run a network that includes Windows NT 3.51 and 4. Will the course show me how to migrate to Windows Server 2003?

Yes. The course covers the steps to upgrade your systems to Windows Server 2003. It also covers interoperability between Windows NT 4 and Windows Server 2003 domains. You should also consider Course 596, Windows Server® 2003 Active Directory®: Hands-On, which covers full migration and planning issues.

Will this course teach me how to troubleshoot and optimize Windows Server 2003?

The course covers some administrative troubleshooting and optimization techniques, but does not cover troubleshooting and optimization of the operating system.

Does this course cover Kerberos security?

The course explains Kerberos and NTLM enterprise security. You learn to set security on the file system, network resources and objects within the Active Directory. Course 599, Securing Windows Server® 2003: Hands-On, covers security in more detail.
