Frequently Asked Questions
What is this course about? The operational integrity of any Windows Active Directory
(AD) infrastructure relies on the correct and optimal functioning
of many different components. This course provides in-depth technical
details of the directory and shows you how to leverage this knowledge to
diagnose, troubleshoot and recover from systems failures. In
hands-on exercises, you increase your expertise in
troubleshooting and advance configuration, learning how to use
the correct tools for each situation including ADSI Edit, LDP and more.
Who will benefit from this course? This course is valuable for experienced Windows administrators
and those who need to deepen their understanding of the Active
Directory. Typical participants include:
Those responsible for supporting business-critical Windows systemsThose who design or support high availability systems and advanced architectures What background do I need?Course 595, Windows Server® 2003: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, or equivalent experience
is assumed. Specifically, you should have knowledge of Windows Active Directory concepts such as forests, domains, sites, replication, domain controllers, organizational units and group policy. The course shows how critical system components can fail and how they may be repaired. Course 596, Windows Server® 2003 Active Directory®: Hands-On, or equivalent AD exposure also is helpful. ADSI Edit and ntdsutil to investigate and manage changes within the directory.

network monitor as a troubleshooting tool to diagnose logon
and other failures.
Will I learn how to configure the Registry? No, however, important keys that affect the AD are mentioned in the course.Does the course cover problems such as slow response times?Yes. Slow logons, system startup and management are
invariably the results of incorrect configuration. The course
takes you through all the aspects of checking the health of
Domain Controllers and associated services.
We are having problems delegating some Active Directory administration tasks. Will this course help me to solve those problems?Delegation of administration in the AD is controlled through
object security. The course shows you how to use auditing and
other techniques to resolve difficult delegation tasks.
Do we learn about authoritative restores and deleted directory objects? This course does cover authoritative restores and you perform a
hands-on exercise where you recover deleted objects from backup.
How much time is spent on each topic?| Content | Hours | | Introduction and overview | 1.5 | | Managing AD objects and the schema | 7.0 | | Controlling AD security | 4.5 | | Troubleshooting AD services | 6.0 | | Backup, restore and disaster recovery | 3.0 | | Replicating the Active Directory | 5.0 | | Troubleshooting SYSVOL and FRS | 2.0 | Times, including the workshops, are estimates; exact times may vary according to the needs of each class. What kinds of hands-on exercises does
the course include? This course has extensive hands-on exercises in which you learn to diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve Windows Active Directory problems.
