Course: 481     Type: Hands-On     Duration: 5 Days

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this course about?

This course builds on the introduction to Cisco routers provided in Course 466, Cisco® Networking: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction. Through hands-on exercises, you gain the advanced knowledge and skills needed to install, configure and troubleshoot Cisco routers in today's large and complex networks.

The goal of this course is to provide you with a thorough understanding of internetworking in a multiprotocol environment using Cisco routers.

Who will benefit from this course?

This course is valuable for network managers, technicians, consultants and designers who are involved in planning and implementing internetworks with Cisco routers.

What background do I need?

It is assumed that you have a fundamental understanding of internetworking concepts and have some experience with router configuration. Course 466 provides the background knowledge you need.

What kinds of routers does the course use?

We use Cisco routers (2600 series) in this course. The command syntax and principles described in this course are applicable to any model of configurable Cisco router.

Will I have access to a router?

Yes. Each workstation has its own router (two participants at each workstation). Most of the hands-on exercises allow each group to work independently, but the WAN interfaces exercise requires connection with another group.

What will I be able to do after completing this course that I am not able to do now?

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Have familiarity with Cisco router configuration using command line syntax
  • Configure interior/exterior routing protocols
  • Understand OSPF configuration; you configure the scalable IP-based routing protocols, including EIGRP, OSPF and BGP
  • Understand the concept of variable length subnet masking and route summarization
  • Understand the concepts and implications of building large scale internetworks
  • Deploy access control on a Cisco router
  • Configure traffic filtering in your internetwork
  • Discuss and identify the issues related to wide area networking using frame relay
  • Configure queuing in support of multiservice operation

How does this course prepare me for the Cisco Certified Professional exams?

This course covers many of the topics contained in both the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) and the Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP) Internetworks exams. For more information about these exam, consult the Cisco Web site at www.cisco.com or the Learning Tree Cisco Certification and testing Q&A.

How much time does the course spent on each topic?

Cisco internetworking 2.5
Advanced IP routing protocols 8.0
Deploying large-scale IP networks3.0
Network Address Translation (NAT)3.5
Improving network security6.5
Tunneling1.5
IP quality of service3.0
Interfacing with external networks 3.0
Times, including the workshops, are estimates; exact times may vary according to the needs of each class.

What kinds of hands-on exercises are performed in this course?

About 40 percent of class time is spent in hands-on exercises. Exercises include:

  • Initial router configuration
  • Configuring IP-Enhanced IGRP (EIGRP)
  • Using address summarization
  • Setting up a tunnel
  • Configuring Dynamic NAT
  • Configuring and optimizing OSPF
  • Implementing address filtering with IP standard access lists
  • IP traffic filtering
  • Session filtering
  • Configuring BGP
  • Configuring queuing in support of multiservice IP

Which operating system does the course use for the hands-on exercises?

Each workstation will have a computer running Windows XP. This system is used to interact with the router using a terminal emulator and a TFTP server. The class network uses Ethernet and simulated Wide Area Links.
